WISDOM AND PRIDE
Today, i've done some studies on pride in the bible. I think that it is very important for one to know what God really thinks about pride and how we should humble ourself before God and before men in order not to stumble. Everyone in this world has a certain degree of pride in their life, but it is up to us to decide whether do we want to humble ourself or not.
Proverbs 8:12-13, "I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth i hate."
From this verse, we see wisdom tied directly to the fear of the LORD. The offer of wisdom is held out only to those who fear God. Coming to wisdom requires coming to God, and coming to God means turning away from all that God hates-evil, pride, arrogance, misbehavior, and perverse speech. Jesus said tht the truth is found in Him[John 8:32]
Proverbs 13:10, "By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom."
The word pride does not refer to self-esteem or to a positive mental attitude, but to arrogance and a refusal to glorify God. Such pride is self-serving and leads to conflict.
Proverbs 16:18-19, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud."
Destructive pride brings down many winners and is contagious.
Proverbs 29:23, "A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor."
God raises the humble and puts down the arrogant. Mary praised God for doing this marvelous thing. [Luke 1:46-55] {Ps 147:6}
Psalms 147:6, "The LORD lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked down to the ground."
God's greatness may be approached only by the humble, He resists the proud, but He comforts the lowly.
Dan 4:37, "Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down."
Dan 5:20, "But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in rpide, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him."
1 Jhn 2:16, "For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-is not of the Father but is of the world."
The pride of life refers to being proud about one's position in this world.
